Description
Alias Smith and Jones - Seasons 2 & 3! One of the much popular Western series of the 1970's, "Alias Smith and Jones" aired on NBC for three years, from 1971-1973. In the tradition of the hit movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, "Alias Smith and Jones" follows the exploits of former Devil's Hole Gang leaders Kid Curry and Hannibal Heyes, a pair of successful and popular outlaws trying to go straight afterwards a lifetime of mostly non-violent banditry. Settling in a small western town, Curry/Jones and Heyes/Smith must stay out of trouble for an indefinite period of time to earn the pardon the Governor will grant if they can keep to the straight and narrow. In the meantime, they are fair strategy for the bounty hunters and the long arm of the law trying to put them away for good. Only the silver tongue of Heyes/Smith and the quick illustrate of Curry/Jones, (in addition occasional help from their friends on together sides of the law!) keep them out of the hoosegow. Starring Ben Murphy and Pete Duel as the two charming rogues, the series features a strong cast of recurring characters, counting Burl Ives (Big Mac McCreedy) and Walter Brennan (Silky O'Sullivan), as well as an excellent roster of guest stars counting Rory Calhoun, Jack Cassidy, Neville Brand, Anne Archer, Chill Wills, Slim Pickens and John Russell, many of whom made multiple looks on the show. Narrator Roger Davis took on the role of Hannibal Heyes, following the untimely and unfortunate death of Pete Duel during the second season.

Poor quality on some episodes

The picture quality on some of the episodes was poor for a DVD. I can only assume the source tape/film used to transfer to DVD was of poor quality. At times the colors were washed out, light. Picture occasionally smeared/jumped with head movement. I do realize that these DVD's were NOT advertised as being digitally remastered and that may be the difference. The quality on the 2 hr movie was superb. For the price, I think the set was OK. Being a true western fan, I am still pleased with the DVD's.
The show was never the same without Pete Duel

I loved Alias Smith and Jones very much at the time, but the death of Pete Duel was a real blow. The Men That Corrupted Hadleyburg (Episode 18 of Season 2) was Pete Duel's last episode. The show was never the same after that. Roger Davis tried his best to replace Pete but to no avail. It is nice to have all the series available on disc now, but Season One is the set to get, which has 15 great episodes with Pete Duel and Ben Murphy as one of the most appealing pair of robbers since Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
very satisfied

I was so excited to get this package. This is a wonderful old show and I can't stop watching it. The quality is pretty good, not as good as season one, but I was very satisfied. One thing I was hoping for were extras, interviews and possibly a tribute or a mention of Pete Duel's enormous talent and tragic death. No such luck, but the episodes are very entertaining. I still am not able to watch the Roger Davis episodes even though I appreciate the difficult situation he was placed in.
All and all this is highly recommended. Such fine fine television. Peter Duel is still as fresh and exciting today as he was back then. He MADE this show. Buy it and ENJOY!
IGNORE the mistakes on the sleeve of the disc set. I wish someone would have double checked and proof read this. Kind of adds insult to injury. This was the perfect time for Universal to make ammends regarding the callous treatment and insensitive way his death was handled by the network. That is my biggest complaint.
Great series but deserved better!

I agree with most of the other reviews on here so I won't repeat them. I just wish they had provided some extras like interviews or trailers, missing scenes, SOMETHING! It is only the episodes. The series should have been remastered and the whole thing provided in one box set. I mean there are only fifty episodes in total so why have thirty-five in this set. The label of seasons 2 & 3 is a bit misleading. It is really only a season and a half. The series stands the test of time though and I think anyone will enjoy owning it.
Alias Smith and Jones Seasons 2 & 3

At last the complete seasons 2 and 3 of this great series have been released on dvd. Its taken a while for this to happen thats for sure !
I first got season 1 which was on a dvd issued in the uk in PAL picture format and must admit was disappointed when the company failed to follow on with seasons 2 and 3 in PAL so have had to buy it in NTSC. Picture quality on the NTSC set is not as good as the UK PAL DVD unfortunately and again was surprised that after all this time the quality of the American NTSC issue was not as high as it could have been. I used to watch the series on UK TV when first released in the 1970s so know what the picture quality looked like then so can comment fairly on what it looks like on this release. I think the picture quality is ok, i won't rate it higher than that. It should have been digitally enhanced thats for sure with the latest equipment now at the film companies disposal but it hasn't which is a great shame as i doubt if another company will ever release the series.
Having said that, yes i am glad to now be able to watch it all over again, but why do so many dvd companies nowadays do such a rush job on putting out a set of rare tv series and films on dvd. They have had over 30 years after all to get this done properly. We seem to have to rely on good spirited people recording TV programs at home and putting up for sale on auction sites so we can watch these long lost programs. We shouldnt have to do this and the film companies hate people doing it, but until the big film companies get their act together this is what will happen.
Overall very pleased to have all the episodes now on a proper set of dvds but let down by the quality of the film prints.
